NAATI yesterday, today, tomorrow
The symposium at the University of New South Wales on NAATI yesterday, today, tomorrow, held on 22 September, was well attended by a mixed group of translation and interpreting professionals and students.
Adolfo Gentile, former NAATI Board member, spoke about the history of interpreting and translating in Australia and specifically, the creation of a nation-wide system to regulate quality in the provision of these language services. This led to the formation of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters in 1977.
Translation services in Australia, he said, are closely linked with migration patterns, which determine cycles in demand.
Mr Gentile, though “I’m supposed to be retired”, is currently studying for a PhD at Monash University on the history of NAATI.
Pino Migliorino, NAATI Board Director, spoke on current challenges to T&I Credentialing, and he introduced Mark Painting, NAATI’s incoming Chief Executive Office.
The symposium was hosted by the University’s School of Humanities and Languages.
