University of Western Sydney Community Translation Conference

University of Western Sydney Community Translation Conference

Members of the Langpro team attended the Community Translation Conference held at the University of Western Sydney in September 2014.

We heard interesting presentations from translation experts in many languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Malay and Spanish and we were able to meet with teachers and students in the field. Subjects discussed included terminology databases, training, crowd sourcing, translation of materials for hospitals, prisons and tourism, quality assessment and assurance.

The speakers reflect the rich variety of our community – an Arabic translator in Canada, an Australian-born Swahili translator, a Russian-born researcher working at the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, a Briton from the University of Granada Spain, a Malaysian lecturer studying the translation of the BBC news, a Chinese lecturer from the University of Queensland.

The conference was ably run by organisers Dr Mustapha Taibi and Dr Ignacio Garcia of the School of Humanities and Communication Arts, University of Western Sydney.
